Color Light therapy, also known as Chromotherapy, is a method of restoring balance through the application of color to the body. This practice dates back to the Mayan culture.
In India, Ayurveda, an ancient form of medicine practiced for thousands of years, is based on the belief that each person contains five elements of the universe in unique proportions, influencing their personality and constitution. When these elements become imbalanced, Ayurveda uses the energies of the color spectrum to restore harmony.
In ancient Egypt, the art of healing with color was rooted in the Hermetic tradition. The Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used colored minerals, stones, crystals, salves, and dyes as treatments and painted healing sanctuaries in various colors.
In China, traditional Chinese medicine associates colors with each organ and elemental system, focusing on the idea of balance within individuals. The first color wheel was created by Sir Isaac Newton, who divided white sunlight into red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, and blue, connecting the ends of the color spectrum to show the natural flow of colors.
Throughout history, Light Therapy has been valued as a powerful healing source. Today, the therapeutic applications of light and color are being studied in major hospitals and research centers worldwide. Findings suggest that full-spectrum, ultraviolet, colored, and laser light can have therapeutic benefits for various conditions, including chronic pain, depression, and immune disorders.
Wellness Benefits
Light Therapy, as part of a healthy lifestyle, has been reported to temporarily reduce swelling, relieve pain, decrease inflammation, accelerate open wound healing, and significantly reduce recovery time after medical or surgical procedures. Patients have shown increased range of motion, decreased muscle tension and spasm, and improved circulation.
Rejuvenating LED light therapy can be used for temporary pain management, such as joint and back pain, sore or torn muscles, sprains, arthritis, post-surgical scars, burns, wounds, and more. When combined with infrared technology, light therapy (phototherapy) is one of the most effective and noninvasive ways to enhance overall wellness.
Light therapy is also used to temporarily alleviate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which affects individuals when a lack of sunlight leads to seasonal depression. Phototherapy helps with SAD by resetting the internal biological clock (Circadian rhythms), aiding individuals in sleeping better and regulating their mood. Even companies like GE and Philips have developed phototherapeutic products to improve and regulate mood.
Cosmetic Benefits
Light therapy is increasingly used for anti-aging treatments. Many individuals have observed a temporary reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet, and age spots.
According to Web M.D., light therapy is "effective at improving the appearance of the face, neck, and chest by reducing the signs of aging, wrinkles, and age spots." Combined with infrared therapy, LED phototherapy can effectively revitalize the skin.
Healing With Color
Color is light divided into different wavelengths that vibrate at varying speeds and frequencies. Objects that absorb all wavelengths and do not reflect appear black, while those that reflect all wavelengths appear white. Between black and white lies COLOR. Colors are wavelengths of energy that appear as color due to an object's ability to absorb or reflect energy.
Red
Red is known as “The Great Energizer.”
Yellow
Yellow stimulates mental inspiration, awakening higher mental functions.
Green
Green is the universal healing color. Positioned midway in the color spectrum, it embodies both physical and spiritual qualities in equal balance and harmony.
Blue
Blue is at the opposite end of the visible spectrum and can be used for ailments related to speech, communication, or the throat.
Orange
Orange frees the mind, alleviating repression. As a combination of red and yellow, it merges physical energy with mental wisdom, facilitating a transformation from lower physical reaction to higher mental response.
Violet
Violet is the last color visible before light transitions to ultraviolet. It purifies thoughts and feelings, providing inspiration for all endeavors. Violet energy connects us to our spiritual self, offering guidance, wisdom, and inner strength, and enhances artistic talent and creativity. Leonardo da Vinci claimed that meditation power could be increased tenfold by meditating under violet rays, like those found in church windows.
Light therapy utilizes colors for their proposed wellness benefits in addressing emotional and physical disturbances. It is based on the idea that different colors elicit different responses in individuals. Some colors are thought to be stimulating, while others may be calming. Color therapy has been suggested for various uses, grounded in tradition or scientific theories. Consult with a healthcare provider before using color therapy for any purpose.
